GOOGLE "BACKUP AND SYNC": TO SAVE ALL UNLIMITED PHOTO AND VIDEO FOLDERS TO CLOUD

The cloud backup of photos and videos is for me one of the most interesting features introduced in recent years. Recently, Google has set up Google Photos with the ability to upload unlimited free space and photo uploads to "high quality" mode, which applies compression to files without compromising on quality and leaving virtually intact Photos taken with smartphones.

The problem with Google Photos is that the software is mainly designed for smartphones, so it does not sync the files (just uploads automatically) and above all it does not create the folders as we have set it up. To implement these important features, Google Drive comes with its new " Backup and Synchronization" software for Mac and PC that, in addition to the basic folder synchronization functions, implements the functions of photo and video backup such as:

Selecting backup folder (also on external device)

One of the limitations of Google Drive was that (like in dropbox) the files to be synced had to be inside a dedicated folder. With " Backup and Synchronization" we can select the folders we want to sync, one by one, even from external devices such as pendrive, memory cards.
You can sync your folders to an external hard driveAlthough with some limitation it is possible to synchronize the folders even from an external hard drive, however, this must have the same operating system file system. In my case I did the procedure with Apple Osx, formatting my external hard disk in HSF all worked properly.

No space limit for photos and videos

This feature implemented directly from Google Photos allows you to upload high-quality photos and videos, as mentioned above, without any space limit. However, upgrades are available for uploading photos and videos in the original quality. WARNING: Uploading photos and videos directly from Drive to the web will be wasted. Therefore, it is always advisable to always use the " Backup and Sync" software, afterwards it is also possible to move the files to other folders.

Constant file synchronization

File synchronization is constantly active, if we modify, rename, move, or delete a file on our hard drive, it will happen on Google Drive. Similarly, cloud changes will become active on our hard drive.

Partial integration with Google Photos

Photos and Drive are part of the same Google ecosystem, so programmers have thought to integrate in part the two apps, so you can view photos and videos uploaded through " Backup and Sync" on Google Photos.

What is missing to be perfect?

It would have been enough to add folders to Google Photos to get the most out of this software. Files uploaded to Google Photos are displayed in chronological order, so sorting them into folders and subfolders that we have on Google Drive (and hence on our hard drive) will not be rebuilt. In addition, since we are talking about backups, we do not understand why external disks are not fully supported, they must be formatted with the same operating system file system to be read.
